C and the Crux
How the footer’s verdict on the question’s frame relates to the Crux, and where Poetix and Zexel part ways.
1
How often the Crux fires under each C verdict
When a footer gives a particular C verdict, how often does the same footer report a Crux fire?
Read across a row. Each cell is fires / footers with that verdict, and the percentage. The four columns are the two engines, each across all its modes and in mode P alone.
| C verdict | Poetix · all modes | Poetix · P | Zexel · all modes | Zexel · P |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AFFIRM | 12/54 (22%) | 5/23 (22%) | 0/48 (0%) | 0/31 (0%) |
| MODIFY | 52/72 (72%) | 19/28 (68%) | 5/11 (45%) | 4/9 (44%) |
| REFRAME | 43/49 (88%) | 14/17 (82%) | 15/22 (68%) | 9/15 (60%) |
| exhausted → Crux | 25/25 (100%) | 8/8 (100%) | 29/29 (100%) | 23/23 (100%) |
| MODIFY → Crux | 1/1 (100%) | – | – | – |
| — | 4/6 (67%) | 1/1 (100%) | 1/1 (100%) | – |
Bar = share of footers with that verdict that also report a Crux fire. MODIFY → Crux (1 footer) and “—” are in the table only.
The Crux and the C verdict move together in both engines. exhausted → Crux always comes with a fire (Poetix 25/25 (100%), Zexel 29/29 (100%)); REFRAME usually does (Poetix 43/49 (88%), Zexel 15/22 (68%)); MODIFY often (Poetix 52/72 (72%), Zexel 5/11 (45%)); AFFIRM rarely.
The sharpest line is AFFIRM. Zexel never fires the Crux when it affirms the frame (0/48 (0%)). Poetix sometimes does (12/54 (22%)): it accepts the frame and still reaches for a new idea. That may be what a poem does that an argument can’t, and Poetix’s looser gate allows it; whether the new idea adds anything is a question for the record, not the footer.
Part of this link is built into the definitions: “exhausted → Crux” names a hand-off to the Crux, and AFFIRM says the frame holds. The table shows how strictly each engine keeps to that, not an independent discovery.
2
What C says when the Crux fires, and when it doesn’t
Turning Table 1 around: among the footers that fired (or did not), which C verdicts appear?
Read down a column. Each column adds up to 100% of that engine’s fires, or non-fires, across all modes.
| C verdict | Poetix · fired | Poetix · did not fire | Zexel · fired | Zexel · did not fire |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AFFIRM | 12/137 (9%) | 42/70 (60%) | 0/50 (0%) | 48/61 (79%) |
| MODIFY | 52/137 (38%) | 20/70 (29%) | 5/50 (10%) | 6/61 (10%) |
| REFRAME | 43/137 (31%) | 6/70 (9%) | 15/50 (30%) | 7/61 (11%) |
| exhausted → Crux | 25/137 (18%) | 0/70 (0%) | 29/50 (58%) | 0/61 (0%) |
| MODIFY → Crux | 1/137 (1%) | 0/70 (0%) | 0/50 (0%) | 0/61 (0%) |
| — | 4/137 (3%) | 2/70 (3%) | 1/50 (2%) | 0/61 (0%) |
When Zexel fires, C is most often exhausted → Crux (29/50 (58%)): Zexel tends to reach the Crux by declaring the frame used up. When Poetix fires, C is most often MODIFY (52/137 (38%)) or REFRAME (43/137 (31%)): Poetix reaches the Crux while still working on the frame.
When neither fires, both mostly affirm (Poetix 42/70 (60%), Zexel 48/61 (79%)).
3
How often each engine gives each verdict
Across all footers, how does each engine’s mix of C verdicts compare?
Each cell is footers with that verdict / all footers in the column. “Difference” is Poetix minus Zexel, in percentage points: positive means Poetix gives that verdict more often.
| C verdict | Poetix · all modes | Zexel · all modes | difference | Poetix · P | Zexel · P | difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AFFIRM | 54/207 (26%) | 48/111 (43%) | -17 | 23/77 (30%) | 31/78 (40%) | -10 |
| MODIFY | 72/207 (35%) | 11/111 (10%) | +25 | 28/77 (36%) | 9/78 (12%) | +25 |
| REFRAME | 49/207 (24%) | 22/111 (20%) | +4 | 17/77 (22%) | 15/78 (19%) | +3 |
| exhausted → Crux | 25/207 (12%) | 29/111 (26%) | -14 | 8/77 (10%) | 23/78 (29%) | -19 |
| MODIFY → Crux | 1/207 (0%) | 0/111 (0%) | +0 | 0/77 (0%) | 0/78 (0%) | +0 |
| — | 6/207 (3%) | 1/111 (1%) | +2 | 1/77 (1%) | 0/78 (0%) | +1 |
Bar = share of all footers in that column giving the verdict.
The engines reframe at about the same rate (a gap of 4 points across all modes, 3 in P). They differ in what they do otherwise: Poetix modifies the frame far more (25 points; 25 in P), and Zexel affirms it more (17 points; 10 in P) or hands it to the Crux (exhausted → Crux, 14 points; 19 in P).
In words: both engines rebuild a frame about equally often. Short of rebuilding it, Poetix adjusts it; Zexel either accepts it or declares it used up.

REFRAME, MODIFY and AFFIRM by question group
Does the pattern in Table 3 hold for every kind of question?
Same reading as Table 3, split by question group. Groups are small: a per-question P column holds 16–17 footers, so one footer moves a percentage by about 6 points.

Non-binary (Q23 + Q33)
Across all modes, the close REFRAME rates hold in every single-question group but the binary one: the two engines stay within 5 points of each other on Q1, Q22 and the non-binary pair. In P alone the groups are small enough to swing further (Q22 kitchen appliance +12, Non-binary (Q23 + Q33) -14 points), so the P column shouldn’t be read question by question.
The exception is the binary question (Q5, “Is AA a religion or a technology?”). There Poetix reframes 27/45 (60%) against Zexel’s 9/24 (38%); in P, 11/16 (69%) against 6/17 (35%). Given an either/or, Poetix mostly rebuilds the frame; Zexel splits between rebuilding it and handing it to the Crux (exhausted → Crux 10/24 (42%)).
Poetix modifies more than Zexel in every group; the widest gap is Non-binary (Q23 + Q33) (+34 points, +39 in P). Zexel affirms more in most groups; the widest gap is Q1 metal (-35 points), where Zexel affirms 20/25 (80%) of footers. The kitchen appliance is the one group where the two engines affirm about equally (-3 points; +0 in P).
